How to track featured snippets in Search Console

Google Search Console does not label featured snippets, but they show a pattern: a question query at average position 1 with impressions far above its clicks, on a page that is not otherwise your top page. Filter the Performance report to question queries, sort by position, and the ones at 1.0 with that pattern are the boxes you hold. Keep the list monthly and you can watch them come and go.

The steps

Open Performance, Search results. Set the date range to the last 28 days.
Filter queries containing "how", "what", "can", "do", "does", "is", or "cost".
Add the Position and Impressions columns and sort by position.
Queries at position 1.0 to 1.2 with high impressions are candidates. Search each one in a logged-out window to confirm.
Export the list. Next month, compare.

What the numbers mean

A snippet often has more impressions than clicks because people read the box and leave. For a local service that is fine: the question they asked was on the way to a call, and the box has your name on it. Watch the page’s clicks and the calls in Analytics over the same period.

Losing one

When a question drops from position 1 to 3 overnight, someone else took the box. Open their page, see what they answer that you do not, and answer it better. Boxes change hands on the strength of the passage.

Can I see snippets in a third-party tool?

Yes, the paid rank trackers flag them. Search Console is free and close enough for a local business.

Does People Also Ask show the same way?

Roughly. A question you hold in the box shows as a high position with modest impressions, because fewer people expand it.

How often should I check?

Monthly, as part of the report. Weekly is noise.
