How to win a featured snippet
You win a featured snippet by answering one specific question in the first paragraph of a page that already ranks on the first page for that question, in a form Google can lift whole. The answer has to be short, direct, and complete on its own. Everything else on the page supports it.
What Google is looking for
Google shows a snippet when it is confident one passage answers the query. It prefers a passage of roughly 40 to 60 words for a definition, a numbered list for a how-to, and a table for a comparison. It takes the passage from a page that already ranks, usually in the top five. The page does not have to be first.
The steps
- Pick a question your customers ask, in their words. Search Console and the People Also Ask box tell you which ones.
- Give it its own heading on the page, worded as the question.
- Answer it in the first sentence under that heading. Then explain.
- Match the shape Google wants: a sentence for a definition, a numbered list for steps, a table for a comparison.
- Make sure the page ranks for the question at all. If it is not on page one or two, fix that first.
- Check Search Console a few weeks later. Position 1 with a jump in impressions usually means you have the box.
An example
A physical therapy clinic wants the box for "do I need a referral for physical therapy." The heading is the question. The first sentence is "In Minnesota you do not need a referral to see a physical therapist; you can book directly." The next paragraph explains the insurance exception. That page holds the box for its state because it answers outright and it is specific.
What loses the box
Answering with a question. Burying the answer under a story. Hedging with "it depends" and never saying on what. Putting the answer in an image. And answering a different, broader question than the one people typed.
Questions people ask
Does the featured snippet steal my clicks?
For some questions people read the box and leave. For local services they usually click, because the box tells them you are the one who knows. Either way, the box is above every competitor.
Can I mark a passage as the answer with schema?
FAQ and how-to structured data help Google understand the page, but they do not force the snippet. The passage itself has to be the best answer.
How many snippets can one page win?
Several, if the page answers several distinct questions under their own headings. One question per heading, one answer per first sentence.
