What the People Also Ask box is

People Also Ask is the box of four related questions Google places among the results for most searches that sound like a question. Each line opens with a click to show a short passage and the page it came from. When one opens, Google adds more questions at the bottom, so the box can grow to a dozen or more. The passages are chosen the same way featured snippets are, from a heading and the paragraph or list under it.

The box differs from the snippet in two ways that matter to a local business. Google pulls from a wider set of pages, including pages ranking below the first ten, so a page that cannot win the snippet can still appear here. The questions in the box are also Google’s rather than the searcher’s, drawn from what people ask next, which makes the box a free list of what to write.

The same passages feed voice replies and Google’s AI Overviews, so a page that appears here tends to be quoted in more than one place, which is part of how assistants choose the sources they name.

What an empty People Also Ask box looks like for a mortgage lender

A mortgage search nearly always brings up a People Also Ask box, because borrowers ask in chains. Someone who types how much down payment for a house in Idaho is then shown what credit score you need, how much closing costs are, and whether you can buy with 5 percent down, and opens two of them before clicking any result.

The pages inside those boxes belong to national lenders and rate comparison sites. The local lender is not there, even though its loan officers answer the same questions on the phone all day. Its Loan Programs page lists FHA, VA, conventional and USDA loans as four paragraphs of program descriptions, none holding a question or a number. Its blog has a 1,400-word guide to buying a home in southeast Idaho that touches every question and answers none in a form Google can lift.

So the borrower learns the credit score rule from a site in another state and calls the lender whose name they saw three times in the box.

A worked example: a Pocatello lender answering the questions in the box

Bannock Home Lending closes about 22 loans a month from one office in Pocatello. Typing its ten most common borrower questions into Google and opening each People Also Ask box produced a list of 26 distinct questions. Each was matched to the page on the site that should answer it, and to whether any page did.

Nineteen of the 26 questions had a page to belong to, and seven needed a new one, the closing costs page among them. Here is the FHA page’s opening as it stood.

You need a credit score of 580 or higher to get an FHA loan with 3.5 percent down. With a score between 500 and 579 the minimum down payment rises to 10 percent. Those are the FHA’s own floors, and Bannock Home Lending in Pocatello applies them without adding a higher requirement of its own, which some lenders do.

That is 57 words, with the two numbers a borrower is looking for in the first two sentences and the local fact in the third. The VA question stayed with the national lender, whose passage was already 38 words and said no in its first word. The lender’s own VA paragraph had the answer but started with a sentence about honoring service. That one is queued for a rewrite.

How to check your own People Also Ask questions

1. Open a private browser window and type the question a borrower asks you most, with your state in it.
2. Find the People Also Ask box and write down all four questions. Click each one open and note the site named under the answer. Then write down the new questions that appear.
3. Repeat for your ten most common questions, then remove duplicates and mark the ones your site answers anywhere. Expect 20 to 40 questions.
4. For each question you answer, open the page and find the passage. If it is not under a heading that matches the question, or the answer is not in the first sentence, Google is unlikely to lift it.
5. In Google Search Console, open Performance and filter Queries to those starting with what, how or can. A query with many impressions, a position between 2 and 8 and a very low click rate is often already appearing in the box, since People Also Ask impressions are counted there.

Do this quarterly. The questions in the box change as the market does, and a new question is a new section to write.
