What answer engine optimization is and who it is for

This page is for an owner who keeps hearing the term and wants to know whether it applies to a park, a clinic or a shop. After reading it you will know what an answer box is and whether your site is in one.

In one paragraph

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making a passage on your website the exact answer Google shows for a question, in the featured snippet at the top of the results, in the People Also Ask box, or as the reply a voice assistant reads out. It is for any local business whose customers ask questions before they book or call, such as whether a park takes dogs or how far it is to the lake. Google lifts the answer from a short block of text on your page, so the work is writing that block so it can be taken out whole and still make sense.

What answer engine optimization is

When a person types a question into Google, the results page often opens with a box that answers it before any of the ten blue links. That box is a featured snippet. Below it sits a set of related questions under the heading People Also Ask, and each one opens to show a short answer taken from a website. When the same person asks Google Assistant or Siri out loud, the assistant reads one of those answers back. Answer engine optimization is the work of making the answer come from your site.

It is a narrower job than search engine optimization. SEO gets your page onto the results page. AEO takes a page that already ranks and shapes one passage on it so Google can pull that passage out and show it as the answer. The two overlap, but a page can rank fourth and still hold the answer box, and a page can rank first and never appear in it.

It is also different from being named by ChatGPT or Gemini. That is generative engine optimization, which has its own guide.

What missing answers look like on an RV park website

An RV park lives on questions. People ask whether the park takes dogs, whether a 42-foot fifth wheel will fit, whether the sites have 50-amp power, how far it is to the lake, and whether the bathhouse is heated in October. Every one of those is typed into Google, often from a phone at a rest stop two hours away.

On most park websites the answers exist, but they are buried. The pet policy is a line inside a 400-word welcome paragraph. The site lengths are in a PDF site map. The power rating is a checkmark in an amenities grid with no sentence around it. Google cannot lift a checkmark into an answer box, and it will not quote the middle of a paragraph that starts with a welcome and ends with a phone number.

So the answer box goes to a review site, a booking platform, or a forum thread from 2019, and the park that actually knows the answer is not in it. The person reads the forum answer, which may be wrong, and books somewhere that felt more certain.

A worked example: an 84-site park in Sandpoint answering its own questions

Pend Oreille Shores RV Park has 84 sites in Sandpoint at $58 a night in summer. Its site ranked on page one for the park’s own name and for a handful of RV park Sandpoint searches, but for the questions guests actually ask, the answer boxes belonged to other sites.

Here is the pet policy as it stood, one paragraph among several on the home page.

Welcome to Pend Oreille Shores RV Park, your home away from home on the shores of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille. We offer a wide variety of amenities for the whole family, including your four-legged family members, and our friendly staff is always happy to help. Give us a call today to learn more about our pet policy and everything else we have to offer.

Here is the same fact rewritten as its own short section on the park’s Rates and Policies page, under a heading that matches the question.

Pend Oreille Shores RV Park allows up to two dogs per site at no extra charge. Dogs must be leashed outside your RV, and the fenced dog run beside site 40 is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. There are no breed restrictions. Dogs left barking unattended will be asked to leave with their owners.

The after version is 54 words, states the fact in the first sentence, and makes sense with nothing around it. The same treatment went onto the sites page for the 50-amp count (61 of 84 sites) and the longest pull-through (75 feet), and a new winter section stated plainly that the park closes October 15 and reopens April 15. Each fact now sits under a heading that repeats the question, which is the form Google lifts.

How to check your own answer engine results

  1. Write down the ten questions guests ask by phone most often. The front desk knows them.
  2. Open a private browser window so your own history does not shape the results, and type each question into Google the way a guest would, with your town in it.
  3. Note what appears above the first link. If there is a box with a paragraph or list and a site name under it, that is the featured snippet. Write down whose site it is.
  4. Open the People Also Ask questions and note whose sites answer them.
  5. Search your own site for each fact. Use site:yourpark.com dogs to see which page Google has for it, if any.
  6. In Google Search Console, open Performance, filter to queries containing a question word such as does or how, and see which of your pages get impressions for them. A page that shows at position 1 with a low click rate is often inside the answer box already.

If your site holds fewer than three of the ten answer boxes, there is room to gain most of the rest, because the current holders are usually directories that never state the fact as clearly as you can.

What we do about answer engine optimization

You get a list of the questions your customers type, checked against live results to show which ones your site answers now and who holds the rest. Each question then gets a short passage on the right page of your site, under a heading that matches the question, written so Google can lift it out whole. Facts come from you and from your Google Business Profile, never guessed. The results are checked again each month so you can see the answer boxes move. This is part of every Hazer search plan, and it starts with that first list of questions.

Questions people ask about AEO: what answer engine optimization is and who it is for

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the work of making a passage on your website the answer Google shows in a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, or a voice reply. It builds on ordinary search rankings rather than replacing them.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO gets your page onto the results page, and AEO shapes a passage on that page so Google can show it as the answer at the top. A page usually needs to rank on page one before it can win the answer box, so the two are done together.

Does a small local business need answer engine optimization?

Yes, if customers ask questions before they call or book. An RV park, a clinic or a builder answers the same twenty questions every week by phone, and each of those questions is also typed into Google. The business that states the answer clearly on its own site is the one Google shows.

How is AEO different from showing up in ChatGPT?

AEO is about Google's answer boxes and voice replies, which quote one passage from one page. Being named inside a ChatGPT or Gemini answer is generative engine optimization, which depends on different signals and is covered in the GEO guide.

Can a page rank first and still not be the answer?

Yes. The answer box is chosen from pages that rank well, but it goes to the page with the clearest passage, not the highest one. A page ranking fourth with a plain 50-word answer under a matching heading will take the box from a page ranking first that buries the fact in a paragraph.
