Do AI assistants read PDF menus and price lists?
Sometimes, and not reliably. Assistants can read a PDF that contains real text, but they often skip PDFs when a page would do, and they cannot read a PDF or an image that is a picture of text. If your menu, price list, rate card, or site map exists only as a PDF or a JPEG, the assistants and Google are guessing at what you offer and what it costs. Put it on a page as text.
Why it matters
The questions people ask assistants about a restaurant, a storage facility, a salon, or a park are price and menu questions. If the answer is in a picture, the assistant answers from reviews or from a competitor whose prices are text. You lose the recommendation to whoever wrote it down.
How to convert
- Put the menu or price list on its own page as headings and text, one item per line, with the price.
- Keep the PDF for printing if you like, and link to it from the page, not instead of the page.
- Add structured data where it fits: Menu for restaurants, Offer for priced services.
- Date the page and update it when prices change.
A quick test
Open your menu or price page, select all, and copy. Paste into a plain text editor. If the prices came through as text, a machine can read them. If nothing came through, it is a picture.
Questions people ask
Our menu changes weekly. Is a page practical?
A page is easier to change than a PDF. Edit the text and it is live; no file to regenerate.
Does Google read PDFs?
Google indexes text PDFs, but it prefers pages, and PDFs rarely rank for local questions.
What about a menu on a third-party ordering site?
Keep a text copy on your own site too. The assistants trust your site over a platform, and platforms change.
