How to check if ChatGPT can read your website

Check three things. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and make sure GPTBot is not blocked. Open your homepage with a text-only view and confirm the important facts are text, not images or script. Then ask ChatGPT to describe your business from your website and see what it gets right.

Check one: robots.txt

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Look for User-agent: GPTBot followed by Disallow: /, or a blanket User-agent: * with Disallow: /. Either one blocks ChatGPT. Some SEO and security plugins add the GPTBot block with a single checkbox, often turned on by default.

Check two: is it text?

Assistants read the HTML, not the picture of the page. In Chrome, right-click and choose View page source, then search for your phone number and your main service. If they appear only inside an image, a PDF menu, or a script that builds the page after it loads, the assistant may never see them. Hours in a header image are the most common miss.

Check three: ask it

Ask ChatGPT: "Using only my website at yourdomain.com, describe what this business does, where it is, and its hours." If it declines, it cannot reach the site. If it answers with wrong facts, it is reading old or contradictory pages. Do the same in Perplexity, which shows the pages it used.

What to do with the results

Blocked: fix robots.txt. Missing facts: put them in text on the page. Wrong facts: find the page the assistant used and correct it, and check that your listings say the same thing.

My site is built with a page builder. Does that matter?

Usually not, as long as the text is in the HTML. Sites that load everything with JavaScript after the page arrives are the ones to test.

Should I let ChatGPT read my whole site?

Yes, for a business site. There is nothing there you do not want a customer to know.

After any change to the site, a plugin, or hosting. And once a quarter regardless.
