How to check what AI assistants say about your business
Ask each assistant the five questions your customers ask, phrased the way a customer would, in a signed-out browser, and record who it names, what facts it states about you, and which pages it cites. Do it monthly in a spreadsheet. That sheet is the baseline for GEO and the report that shows whether the work is moving.
The questions
- A recommendation: "best [trade] in [town]" or "who should I call for [service] near [town]."
- A fact check: "what are [your business]’s hours" or "does [your business] do [service]."
- A comparison: "[your business] vs [competitor]."
- A cost question: "how much does [service] cost in [town]."
- Your own name: "tell me about [your business]."
How to ask
Signed out, so your history does not color the answer. Same wording every month. After each answer, ask "why did you choose those" and "what sources did you use." Perplexity shows sources by default; the others will list them when asked.
How to read the answers
Named or not named. Facts right or wrong. Sources yours or someone else’s. A wrong fact points to a page to fix, usually a listing. Not being named points to what the named businesses have on their sites that you do not.
Questions people ask
How long does this take?
About thirty minutes a month for four assistants and five questions.
Do the answers change between people?
Somewhat. Signed-out and same wording keeps it comparable month to month.
What if an assistant says something false about us?
Find the source it cites and fix it there. The assistants repeat the web; correct the web.
