How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT
ChatGPT recommends a business when it can find clear, consistent facts about it in more than one place: your own website, your Google Business Profile, directory listings, and reviews. If those sources agree on what you do, where you are, and who you serve, you get named. If they are thin or contradict each other, it names someone else.
Where ChatGPT gets its answers
When someone asks ChatGPT for a plumber in Twin Falls, it does not have a private list of plumbers. It searches the web, reads the pages it finds, and writes a paragraph from them. The pages it trusts are the ones that state facts plainly: a business name, an address, a service, a price, hours, and a policy, written in sentences rather than buried in a design.
It also cross-checks. A business that is described the same way on its own site, on Google, on Yelp, and on the local chamber page is easy to recommend. One whose hours differ between Google and its website, or whose site never says which towns it serves, is a risk, and the assistant avoids risks.
What has to be on your website
- A sentence that says what you do and where, on the homepage, in plain words. "We repair furnaces and air conditioners in Twin Falls, Jerome, and Burley."
- One page per service, each with a price range, what is included, and who it is for.
- A page that names your service area town by town.
- Your hours, phone, and address as text on every page, not only in an image or a map.
- Answers to the questions people ask before they call, each in one or two sentences a machine can lift.
- A robots.txt that lets the AI crawlers in. Many sites block them by accident.
What has to be true off your website
Your Google Business Profile needs the right primary category, complete hours, the services listed, and photos. Your listings on the major directories need to match it word for word. And your reviews need to mention the things people ask about, which happens when you ask customers to say what they had done, not just to leave five stars.
ChatGPT reads reviews as evidence. A dentist with 80 reviews that mention emergencies and new patients gets recommended for "emergency dentist that takes new patients." A dentist with 300 reviews that only say "great staff" does not.
How to check where you stand
Ask ChatGPT the question your customers ask, the way they would ask it, and see who it names. Then ask it why. It will tell you what it found and where. Do the same in Gemini and Perplexity, which cite their sources directly. That list of sources is your to-do list.
How long it takes
Changes to your site and listings are usually picked up within a few weeks. Reviews take longer because they accumulate. Most businesses see themselves named for their core question inside a quarter, if the facts are in place. There is no way to pay for a mention.
Questions people ask
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. There is no advertising placement inside ChatGPT answers. Recommendations come from what the assistant finds on the web about your business.
Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?
It reads review content it can reach, including Google, Yelp, and industry sites, and it uses what the reviews say, not only the star rating.
Do I need to block or allow the ChatGPT crawler?
Allow it. The crawler is named GPTBot, and if your robots.txt blocks it, ChatGPT cannot read your site and will rely on what other sites say about you.
