How to measure AI assistant traffic in Google Analytics
Visits from AI assistants arrive in Google Analytics 4 as referral traffic from domains like chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, and copilot.microsoft.com. Group those sources into one channel and you can report AI traffic every month, next to Google and social.
Where to look
In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Change the dimension to Session source. Look for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, and claude.ai. Those sessions came from someone clicking a link inside an assistant’s answer.
Make it a channel
- Open Admin, then Data settings, then Channel groups.
- Create a new channel group or edit the default one.
- Add a channel named AI assistants with a rule: Session source matches regex chatgpt|perplexity|gemini|copilot|claude.
- Move it above Referral so those sessions land in it first.
- From then on, every acquisition report has an AI assistants row.
What it will not show you
Most AI recommendations never produce a click. The person reads the paragraph and calls. So the referral number understates the effect. Pair it with two other checks: ask the assistants your customers’ questions each month and record whether you are named, and watch direct traffic and calls for the same period.
What good looks like
For a local business, going from zero to a steady monthly number is the first milestone. One of our clients, an RV park, went from zero to 299 visits from AI assistants in a year, all of it from the assistants being able to read the site and the listings agreeing.
Questions people ask
Why does ChatGPT traffic show as direct sometimes?
The ChatGPT app on a phone does not always pass a referrer. Those sessions land in Direct. The channel group catches what carries a referrer; assume the true number is higher.
Does Google AI Overviews show up separately?
No. Clicks from an AI Overview arrive as google organic. Search Console does not break them out either, yet.
Can I see which page the assistant sent people to?
Yes. Add Landing page as a secondary dimension in the same report. It tells you which pages the assistants are citing.
