How to show up in Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews cite pages that answer the searcher’s question directly, rank well already, and state facts a machine can quote. To be cited, give each question its own heading and an answer in the first sentence, keep your Google Business Profile complete, and make sure your site is the most specific source for your own facts.
What an AI Overview is
For many searches Google now writes a short summary at the top of the results and links to the pages it drew from. The summary is generated, but the links are real pages. For a local search, the Overview often blends the map pack with facts from business websites.
What gets cited
- Pages that already rank in the top results for the query.
- Passages that answer the question outright, in the same shape as a featured snippet.
- Sources that state facts other pages repeat, which is why listings and reviews matter here too.
- Pages with clear headings, so Google can find the passage for each sub-question.
How this connects to AEO
The work is the same as winning a featured snippet: one question per heading, answer first, then detail. Pages that hold snippets are the pages most often cited in Overviews. So AEO is the direct route.
How to tell if you are in one
Search your customers’ questions in a logged-out browser and look for your site among the Overview links. Search Console counts these clicks as ordinary Google clicks, so the Overview does not show up as its own line. Watch impressions on the question pages; they rise when you are cited.
Questions people ask
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic?
For informational questions, sometimes. For local service questions people still click through to call or book, and being cited puts you above every organic result.
Can I opt out?
You can use nosnippet or max-snippet tags to limit what Google shows. For a business that wants customers, opting out removes you from the top of the page.
Is it the same as Gemini?
No. AI Overviews live inside Google search. Gemini is the standalone assistant. Both read your site, and the same clear facts serve both.
