What is zero-click search, and does it hurt local businesses?

A zero-click search is one where the searcher gets what they needed on the results page, from the answer box, the map pack, or an AI Overview, and never clicks through to a website. For a local business that is often a good outcome: the person saw your hours, your phone number, or your answer, and called. The traffic number goes down and the calls go up.

Where the clicks went

To the map pack, which shows your phone and directions. To the featured snippet, which shows your answer. To the AI Overview, which summarizes several pages. Each of those is a place your business can be, and each one produces a call or a visit without a website session.

What to measure instead

  • Calls and direction requests from your Google Business Profile, in its Insights.
  • Phone taps and form submissions on the site, as events in Google Analytics.
  • Impressions in Search Console, which count every time you were shown, clicked or not.
  • Which questions you hold the box for.

What to do

Make sure the facts shown without a click are right: hours, phone, address, the one-sentence answers. Then make the click worth it for the people who do come: the price, the process, the booking. The businesses hurt by zero-click are the ones whose facts on Google are wrong or missing.

Questions people ask

Is website traffic still worth tracking?

Yes, alongside calls and profile actions. On its own it undercounts what search brings you.

Does AI search make this worse?

It moves more answers onto the results page and into the assistants. The response is the same: be the source of the answer, and make the facts right.

Should I hide my answers to force clicks?

No. Google will lift a competitor’s answer instead, and the caller goes to them.
