Featured snippet vs AI Overview
A featured snippet is one passage lifted word for word from one page and shown in a box above the results. An AI Overview is a summary Google writes itself, with links to the pages it drew from. A snippet is won by one page answering one question outright. An Overview cites several pages, and the ones it cites are usually the ones that hold snippets or rank in the top few results.
Side by side
- Featured snippet: your words, one page, one link, above the results. Measured in Search Console as position 1 with rising impressions.
- AI Overview: Google’s words, several links, above the results. Not broken out in Search Console; clicks count as organic.
- Both: appear for questions more than for names, and both favor pages that answer directly.
How to win each
For the snippet, answer the question in the first sentence under a heading worded as the question, on a page that ranks. For the Overview, do the same, and also make sure your facts are repeated by your listings and reviews, because Google checks agreement before citing a source.
Which matters more for a local business
The snippet, today, because it is your words and your link alone. The Overview matters more each month as Google shows it for more searches. The work is the same, so you do not have to choose.
Questions people ask
Can a page be in both?
Yes. Pages that hold a snippet are often cited in the Overview for the same question.
Do AI Overviews show for local searches?
Increasingly, and they often blend with the map pack. A complete Google Business Profile matters for them.
Does the Overview replace the snippet?
When an Overview shows, the snippet usually does not. The Overview cites the pages the snippet would have used.
