How do AI assistants choose which businesses to recommend?

AI assistants recommend the businesses they can verify. They read your website, your Google Business Profile, your directory listings, your reviews, and any page that mentions you, and they favor the business whose facts are clear, specific, and the same everywhere. They are not ranking you; they are deciding whether they can vouch for you.

The signals, in the order they seem to matter

  • Specific facts on your own site: services, prices, hours, service area, credentials, written as sentences.
  • Agreement: the same name, address, phone, hours, and category on your site, Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, and the directories.
  • Reviews that describe the service. "Replaced our water heater the same day and the price matched the quote" is evidence. "Great service" is not.
  • Mentions on trusted pages: local news, associations, chambers, supplier directories, industry sites.
  • Access: whether the crawlers are allowed in, and whether the site loads as text they can read.
  • Recency: a page updated this year beats one last touched in 2019.

Why they behave this way

An assistant that recommends a closed business or a wrong phone number gets blamed. So the models are built to prefer sources that agree with each other and to skip anything ambiguous. Being safe to recommend is the whole game.

What this means for a small business

You do not need more content. You need the facts you already know written down, once on your site and matched everywhere else, and customers asked to say what you did for them. That is a month of work, not a year, and it is the same work that helps you in Google.

Questions people ask

Do the assistants favor big brands?

They favor businesses with more consistent, verifiable information, and big brands tend to have that. A small business with the same discipline competes on equal terms in its own town.

Do paid ads on Google affect what ChatGPT recommends?

No. Ads are not visible to the assistants as evidence about your business.

Does the number of reviews matter more than what they say?

What they say. A modest number of reviews that describe specific services beats a large number that say nothing.
