How to get your business mentioned on local websites
The assistants treat a mention of your business on a page they already trust as evidence that you are real and good. Those pages are local: the chamber of commerce directory, the local paper, the association your trade belongs to, your suppliers’ dealer locators, the sponsors page of the youth league. Getting on them takes asking, a few hours, and no money.
The list, for most local businesses
- Chamber of commerce member directory.
- The city or county business directory, where one exists.
- Your trade association’s member or find-a-professional page.
- Manufacturer and supplier dealer locators, for anything you install or sell.
- Local news: a story about the business, an expansion, a hire, a community event.
- Sponsorship pages: the school, the league, the festival.
- Neighbor businesses that list partners or referrals.
- The Better Business Bureau, if you are accredited.
How to ask
Send the business name, address, phone, website, and a one-sentence description, all matching your Google profile exactly. Ask for a link to the homepage or the relevant service page. Most of these pages exist to list businesses and will add you the same week.
What not to do
Do not buy links, join link networks, or post your business in comment sections. The assistants and Google both discount those, and the trusted pages notice.
Questions people ask
How many mentions do I need?
A handful of real ones beat hundreds of directory clones. Start with the five your customers would recognize.
Do social media profiles count?
As a source of facts, yes, if they match. As a trusted mention, less than a chamber or a news story.
How do I know which pages the assistants trust?
Ask Perplexity your recommendation question and look at the sources it cites for the businesses it names. Those are the pages.
