How to get your business recommended by Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing’s index, so being recommended by Copilot means being findable and well-described in Bing: a claimed Bing Places listing that matches your Google profile, Bingbot allowed in robots.txt, and pages that state your facts plainly. Most businesses never look at Bing, which is why the ones that do get named.

Why Bing matters again

Copilot is built into Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365, so people use it at work without choosing to. It searches Bing, reads the pages, and writes the answer. If Bing does not know you, Copilot cannot recommend you.

The steps

  • Claim your Bing Places listing at bingplaces.com and import it from Google so the facts match.
  • Check robots.txt for Bingbot; allow it.
  • Add the site to Bing Webmaster Tools and submit the sitemap. It also shows you what Bing indexed.
  • Make sure your service pages state what you do, where, and for whom, in text.
  • Ask Copilot the questions your customers ask and see who it names and why.

What is different from Google

Bing leans harder on the exact words in titles and headings, and on the Bing Places listing for local. The same clear pages work for both; the listing is the extra step.

Questions people ask

Do I need to do this if I rank on Google?

Yes. Bing is a separate index. Ranking on Google does not put you in Bing, and Copilot does not read Google.

Does Bing Places cost anything?

No. It is free, like Google Business Profile.

Is Copilot the same as ChatGPT?

They share a model family, but Copilot searches Bing and ChatGPT searches its own way. Being findable in both indexes covers both.
