What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain text file at the root of your website, like yourdomain.com/llms.txt, that tells AI assistants what the business is and which pages to read first. It is a proposed convention, not a standard every assistant follows, but it costs nothing, and it forces you to write the one-paragraph description of your business that the assistants need anyway.

What goes in it

A heading with the business name.
One paragraph that says what you do, where, and for whom.
A contact line.
A list of your main pages with a one-line description of each.
Links to any guides or resources you publish.

Whether it helps

Honestly, the evidence is thin. Some crawlers read it, some ignore it. What helps for certain is the discipline: the paragraph you write for llms.txt is the same paragraph that belongs on your homepage, in your Google Business Profile description, and in your directory listings. If those four say the same thing, the assistants recommend you. The file is a by-product of doing that.

How to add one

Write the file in any text editor, save it as llms.txt, and upload it to the root folder of your site. Link to it from your robots.txt with a comment if you like. Keep it current; an llms.txt that lists pages you deleted is worse than none.

Questions people ask

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt controls access. llms.txt is a summary. Assistants need permission from robots.txt before llms.txt matters.

Should it include prices?

If you publish prices on the site, yes, a line with the range is useful. Never put anything in llms.txt that is not also on the site.

Do we have one?
